The Ixlaché reef South of Contoy marks the beginning of the second longest barrier reef in the world, the great Mesoamerican Reef barrier.  Isla Contoy is a natural area protected since 1961 and was declared a national park in 1998. It is an island uninhabited and administered by the National Commission of protected natural Areas (CONANP) dependent on the Secretariat of environment and natural resources (SEMARNAT).

Contoy has a length of 8.75 kilometres, its land area covers 230 hectares and a marina of 4,900 hectares portion.

It is the most important refuge for seabirds of the Mexican Caribbean. Its lagoons, mangrove swamps and forests are home to 152 registered bird species.

Since winter is concentrated more than 10,000 birds including frigates, cormoranes, bobo birds, herons, pelicans, terns and coffee.  In the summer, three species of sea turtles come to the beaches of Contoy spawn: the hawksbill turtle, the white and the loggerhead.
98 species of identified plants, especially mangrove forests covering 70% of the surface of the island have been preserved intact, and are home to many species of birds, reptiles, crustaceans and fish.
